The Åland Islands archipelago forms an autonomous, mainly Swedish-speaking, demiliterized region of Finland. The islands are located in the Baltic Sea between Finland and Sweden and have been a matter of dispute between the two countries in the past and was settled by the League of Nations in 1921. The League of Nations decided in favor of Finland which in turn ensured to grant cultural autonomy to the islands.
