What is HGIS?

HGIS or Historical Geographical Information System is a framework that may display, store and analyze data of past geographies and track changes in time. It is much more than just maps but keeps track of information about features that are on the map and can display information about them in various ways.

GIS was originally developed for use in environmental sciences, military and for computer assisted cartography. Most tools developed for these uses are ill suited for the features of historical data but HistoAtlas tries to overcome these problems.

Who is HistoAtlas intended for?

HistoAtlas is for anyone interested in history, starting from students to teachers or historians or just history amateurs.

Why is the data sometimes inconsistent or incomplete?

HistoAtlas is a free editable map of the whole world. It is made by people like you. Which means the database will always be subject to the whims, experimentation, and mistakes of the community. But this is precisely HistoAtlas's strength since, among other things, it allows our data to quickly accommodate changes from discoveries about history.

Who owns HistoAtlas?

You do. The data is owned by you, the contributors.

What license is the data distributed under?

The data is put under a Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 3.0 Unported License which garantees that the data can be used and improved by anyone.

This license gives readers the rights to copy, redistribute and modify a work and requires all copies and derivatives to be available under the same license. Copies may also be sold commercially, but, if produced in larger quantities (greater than 100), the original document or source code must be made available to the work's recipient.

This open license makes sure the data and software continues on being developed and to ensure that errors can be corrected.
